TAKING CARE OF YOUR BACK

 

Backache is a common problem and responsible for major absenteeism at work. Cause range from injury, disc prolapse, vertebral fracture and lumbar spondylosis, vertebral abnormalities. Also pregnancy, hormonal changes and weight gain leads to backache.

 

SYMPTOMS:

·    Persistent aching or stiffness along the spine.

·    Localized sharp shooting pain in neck upper back or lower back after strenuous activity.

·    Chronic ache in lower or middle back.

 

GENERAL HINTS:

·    If you get an attack of backache such as you have already had, go to bed immediately on a firm mattress. Stay there for at least 24 hours, only getting you to go the lavatory.

·    If the backache does not improve in 24 hours, or if the pain goes into your legs, let the doctor know.

·    Relaxation techniques, yoga and meditation help.

·    A diet rich in calcium and multivitamins is recommended.

·    Pain relieving homoeopathic tablets can be taken.

·    When you can sit up in bed without pain, you should get up and start moving about the house normally, taking care to follow the instructions given below, and to carry out the morning and evening exercise as described.
